ANCESTOR MALE FIGURE – SEPIK – PAPUA NEW GUINEA – early 20th C
DESCRIPTION/EXPERTISE This piece displays a light to dark brown patina with some overall remains of old paint/pigment, especially on its head and legs. It shows two separated legs standing on a round base, a prominent male gender, a disproportional tiny torso on which an elongated head stands. This type of figures represent certain founding ancestors or cultural heroes, but various spirit beings as well. Figures of this type belong to important individuals. When solicited, the ancestor speaks out through the owner to whom he has appeared in a dream. Presentation of the young men to the ancestor figures forms an important part of the initiation ritual.
