DESCRIPTION/EXPERTISE
The Olmec were the first major civilization in Mexico. They lived in the tropical lowlands of what is know sout/central Mexica and are world renowned for the massive ‘collossal’ stone heads. It lead the foundations for the civilizations that followed.

Jade face masks, like this one, are enigmatic. Actually, none have been recovered in a archaeologically controlled Olmec context, but have been recovered from sites of other cultures such as Tenochtitlan. The masks apprear to have been collected by the later cultures just as Roman antiquities in Europe.
