DESCRIPTION/EXPERTISE Choiseul, Solomon Islands
This figure symbolises an ancestor, the hands are on the body expressing a symbolic gesture. The figure is asexual and the face symbolises the mythological dog which was believed to teach the islanders the magical knowledge in the early heroic times. The eyes are incrusted with nacre, the sculpure is carved from wood with an ancient brown patina. It was used in scarification rites by the tribals in the Solomon Islands.
