DESCRIPTION/EXPERTISE
Taíno culture had its origins at the Arawak tribes in the Orinoco Delta, and later spread gradually to Venezuela and the Antilles in waves. They are typically associated with the Islands of Hispaniola, Cuba, Jamaïca and Puerto Rico. They were the people who welcomed Christopher Columbus to the New World in 1492, not realising this would mean the rapid end of their culture. Words like barbecue, hammock, tobacco and hurricane are all derived from Taíno language.
