DESCRIPTION/EXPERTISE These stone ‘Yoke’ are associated with the Mesoamerican ballcourts, which is a game playes since 1,400 B.C. by the pre-Colombian people of Ancient Mesoamerica.
The game has important ritual aspects, and major formal ballgames were held as ritual events. The Yoke was worn by the players to be a belt or waist-guard. Some of them can be elaborately decorated.
